The Malapa region of South Africa 2 million years ago. What today is an open savannah (highveld) was then a dense, old growth woodland ecosystem, home to Australopithecus sediba. This hominin is known for two exceptionally complete, partial skeletons, a juvenile and an adult female, unearthed in the Malapa cave (which was then a sinkhole or death trap). Along with the region’s fauna, a family group of A.sediba rests in the foreground next to one of these sinkhole openings.
